The Acceptable Standards of Construction Committee is a non-profit organisation committed to maintaining quality standards in domestic construction in NSW.

We produce the Acceptable Standards of Domestic Construction handbook (ASDC) and the Acceptable Standards of Medium Density Housing Construction handbook (ASMDHC).

About Us

The Acceptable Standards of Construction Committee (previously known as the Uniform Standards Committee) has been in existence for over 80 years.  Members are committed to the contribution of quality standards in domestic construction in NSW. The committee operates as a non-profit organisation to guide the housing industry, financial providers, universities, TAFE colleges, government agencies and the home owner. The committee produces the Acceptable Standards of Domestic Construction handbook (ASDC) and the Acceptable Standards of Medium Density Housing Construction handbook (ASMDHC).

The committee aims to:

  • Contribute to the development of quality standards in domestic construction in NSW
  • Continually review and update the ASDC and ASMDHC handbooks
  • Review the suitability and durability of any new or alternative building materials/systems used in residential construction.

Handbooks

We continually review and update the following handbooks to accommodate new or alternative building materials/systems used in residential construction.

Acceptable Standards of Domestic Construction

The Acceptable Standards of Domestic Construction handbook is available as a guide for home owners and a ready reference for builders, owner-builders, architects, councils, valuers, students and teachers, giving concise guidance on the relevant current standards for domestic construction.
The ASDC handbook is written in plain English for the widest possible use. It interprets Australian Standards and the Building Code of Australia in a practical way to guide work on site, and to establish excellence in building practice. The handbook also identifies requirements for approvals, inspections or the need for consultants for each building activity.

Acceptable Standards of Medium Density Housing Construction

The Acceptable Standards of Medium Density Housing Construction handbook is primarily intended to identify the acceptable construction of conventional, medium density housing up to three storey walk-up apartments. It includes the major pre-construction, regulatory and design issues that affect such projects. A limited set of details and construction methods have been selected.

The content does not necessarily represent the minimum standards but instead, a standard that is thought by the Committee to meet typical expectations. Building designers will need to determine which details best meet the needs of each individual medium-density housing project.
